PAYMENT FOR FOOTBALL
CLAIM BY ENGLISH CLUB. AGREEMENT BETWEEN LEAGUES. London, Sept. 9. "l.ne Colonel,” writing on Rugby League matters in the Manchester Evening Chronicle says trouble is brewing from overseas., ”The St. Helens Club,’ he states, “is claiming the sum of £2OO from New Zealand under the international agreement for Trevor Hall, the forward, who, although still on the champions’ retained list, went home after playing in the League final at Wakefield last May, and figured in football in the Dominion during the summer. "New Zealand is not likely to recognise the claim, for when Hall, together with Hutt and Hardgrave, left Auckland for St. Helens, they did so under protest by the New Zealand authorities, and, as no transfer fee or compensation was paid by the English club, the deal is unlikely to be recognised by the overseas authorities. “Now there are hints that the Rugby League will confiscate any transfer fee paid by an English club to the Dominions under the new agreement in order to compensate St. Helens. In this event, trouble is likely to arise. Wigan has already to pay out £4OO to Australia as the outcome of its signing of Wilson and Gee, the Kangaroos’ test backs of the present summer. “All these tangles could be satisfactorily settled by the establishment of an International Rugbv League Board on the lines of those in Rugby Union and Association circles. As matters stand at the moment, I fear we are to suffer another of these long-drawn-out disputes which only arouse animosity at home and abroad and leave in their trail bitterness and dissatisfaction.”
