WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

FERNHILL GROUP. The monthly meeting was held in the Fernhill Hall on Thursday, June 2. Mrs Dudley Hill presiding over a failattendance of members. After the singing of the institute song, various business affairs were discussed. It was decided to hoM the Institute dance on June 17. The supper will be provided by members, and as the nett proceeds of the dance are to be handed to the local committee of the Red Cross for the relief of distress, it is to be hoped that the evening will prove a financial success.

Then followed a most interesting demonstration of poker work by Miss Hansen, who had brought a beautiful collection of pictures, vases, trays and plaques as samples of her art. The drawing, colouring and polishing of the pictures etc. were carefully explained, and some very pretty poker-work on velvet was shown. A very hearty vote of thanks, proposed by Mrs Hill, was accorded Miss Hansen for her demonstration. Several members who are making string and seagrass stools brought them to the meeting, and those experiencing difficulty in the initial stages were given assistance. A dainty afternoon tea was then served, the hostesses being Mesdanics Campbell and Finch. It was decided that for the next two months at least Institute meetings will commence at 2 p.m. instead of 2.30 p.m. as formerly.
