THE RIVERTON MEETING
CUP GOES TO RULING LIGHT. PAKITERE THE VISITORS. Invercargill, March 26. The Riverton Racing Club’s meeting opened today in glorious weather before a large attendance. The track was in great order. The totalisator handled £13,066 10/- against £14,560 10/- on the first day of last year. Results:— Longwood Handicap.—l Cough (Austin) 1, 4 Trek (Humphries) 2, 9 Barn Door (Dooley) 3. Also ran: 5 Jack a Dandy 2, Toreador, 8 All Smiles, 6 Consono 1 Thornton (coupled with Cough), 12 Ballance, 7 Ohai, 9 Barn Door, 11 Baby Bliss, 3 Red Sun, 10 Sailing Home, 14 Takaka, 13 Anne Shakespeare. Won by a head, third half a length away. Toreador was fourth. Time, 1.29 4-5. RIVERTON CUP. 3 Ruling Light (Cooer) 1 1 The Smuggler (Humphries) .. 2 5 Charmaine (Barclay) 3 Also ran: 2 Black Duke 6 King Balboa, 9 Full Feather,7 Inevitable, 8 Red Racer, 12 Salmo Salar, 11 Bachelors’ Idol, 10 Night Maid, 4 Leading Boy. Won by half a lerf th, third a length away. Inevitable \f.is fourth. Time. 2.8 4-5. The early prominent horses were Red Racer, Charmaine Ruling Light, smuggler and Inevitable. Around the top, the field closed up and a great race home ensued, Ruling Light forging to the front to win by half a length from Smuggler, Charmaine a length back, then Inevitable, Black Duke and Bachelors’ Idol. Great Western Handicap.—-3 Squatter (V. Langford) 1, 6 Heather Lad (Anderton) 2, 4 Values (Kerr) 3. Also ran: 2 Paris (fell), 8 Mata, 5 Lunamoe (fell) 1 Nylotis (fell), 7 French Fleet (fell), 9 Balvasco. Won by four lengths, third a length back. Matu was fourth. Time, 6.44 3-5. Visitors Handicap.—4 Pakitore (Ellis) 1, 7 Steeton (DOlley) 2,2 Totalomai (carried 8.8) (Cleaver) 3. Also ran: 5 Crubenmore, 2 Insolvence (coupled with Totalo), 3 Last March, 1 Normanby, 8 Miss Redowa, 6 Young Sentinel 11 Palada, 9 Slaemish, 10 Traylavah, 12 Some Breeze, 13 Milliner Won by a length, third one and a half away. Insovency was fourth. Time, 1.15 2-5.
Pourakino Handicap.—4 Red Boa (Didham) 1, 1 Gallant Fox (Andrews) 2, 7 Cupid’s Dart (Ross) 3. Also ran: 6 Taboo, 5 Royal Limond, 2 Leading Boy, 3 Night Rose. Won by a neck third half a length away. Leading Boy was fourth. Time, 1.43. OVERHAUL BREAKS ITS NECK Invercargill, March 28. The Riverton meeting was continued to-day in glorious weather and before a large attendance. Also ran: 2 Royal Limond, 3 Night Rose, 6 Ohai, 8 Rombeau, 5 Sailing Home. Won by a nose each way. Ohai was fourth. Time, 2.12 4-5. President’s Handicap.— 8 Crubenmere (Austin) 1, 5 Insolvency (Barclay) 2, 4 Young Sentinel (Ellis) 3. Also ran: 2 Last March, 1 Normandy, 3 Steton, 6 Miss Redowa, 9 Traylavah, 10 Palada, 11 Seme Breeze, 12 Millinter, 7 Brown Pearl. Won by a length, third back a head, Normanby was fourth. Timo, 1.15. Flying Handicap.— 1 Enwood (Austin) 1, 3 Pakitere (Mackie) 2,2 First Money (Ellis) 3. Also ran: 5 Palermo, 6 Solmar, 7 Blue Metal, 4 Royal Sceptre. Won by a length and a half, third back a head Blue Metal was fourth. Time 1.14. Champion Hack.— 6 Red Sun (C. Bradic) 1, 8 Barn Door (Barclay) 2, 5 Trek (Dooley) 3. Won by half a length, third back a length and a half. Consono was fourth. Time. 141 2-5. Easter Handicap 3 Black Duke (Dinfam) 1 4 Charmaine (Barclay) 2 I The Smuggler 3 Also ran: 2 Ruling Light, 5 King Balboa, 7 Full Feather, 6 Red Racer. Won by a head, third back half a length. Ruling Light was fourth. Time, 2.7 3-5., a track record. Red Racer and Charmaine led out
from Ruling Light and Black Duke, and they raced thus into the straight, where Red Racer retired, and The Smuggler came on the scene. A great finish jaw Black Duke beat Charmaine by a head. The Smuggler was half a length away; then came Ruling Light and Red Racer. Steeplechase— 3 Ngahau (Langford) 1, 5 Calham (Walker) 2, 7 Matu (Hunt) 3. Also ran: 1 Paris, 6 Tunamoe, 2 Overhaul (fell), 4 Nylotis (fell). Won by ten lengths, third back four lengths. Tunamoe was fourth. Time, 5.17. Overhaul broke his neck when he fell. Wallace Handicap.— 4 First Song (Austin) 1,2 Thornton (Didham) 2, 7 Ruatui (Jenkins) 3. Also ran: 1 Toreador, 3 Jack a’Dandy, Consono, 6 Anne Shakespeare, 8 Night Moth. Won by a length, third back half a length. Toreador was fourth. Time, 1.28 2-5. Monowai Handicapl Gallant Fox (Didham) 1,2 Inevitable (Dooley) 2. 5 Red Boa (McKay) 3. Also ran: 8 Taboo, 3 Leading Boy, 6 Cupid’s Dart, 4 Night Maid, 7 Captivate. Won by half a length, third back three lengths. Night Maid was fourth. Time, 140:4-5.
