TAUHERENIKAU RACES

EQUITANT GETS HOME. JOHNEEN BREAKS A LEG. Carterton, March 26. The weather was fine but overcast for the first day of the Tauherenikau meeting. Occasional light showers fell but they were not sufficient to interfere with the condition of the course, which was in great order. The attendance started badly but filled up well before the second race. Last year the weather caused a postponement of the first day, consequently a fair comparison of the figures both of tho gates and of the totalisator should be made with last year’s second day. On these figures the gates were up, while the totalisator investments total £B7Ol as against £11,205, a drop of £2504. This is considered very satisfactory. The fields were all despatched well and the racing was good. In tho fifth race, the Tahiarata Hack, Johneen, coupled with Appledore, broke a leg entering the straight and had to be destroyed.
