FIRE

HOMESTEAD DESTROYED. OWNER’S SERIOUS LOSS. (Per Pres, Association.) Blenheim, Dec. 29. Early yesterday morning tho homestead of Mr Thomas Walker, of Grassmere, was totally destroyed by tire together with the contents. Tho house consisted of ten rooms and formerly was a well known accommodation house. The origin of the outbreak is unknown, nlr Walker was iu tho house alone, having just returned from Hanmor, whore bid wife and eon had been left. Mr Walker was awakened at about 2 a.m. and discovered the house ablaze, and escaped in his night attire. Tho flames made a clean sweep. Tho insurances were: On the house £7OO, contents £4OO, in tho Sun office. There was a separate cover for £135 on tho player piano in the North British and Mercantile office. Mr Walker is a heavy loser; many valuable possessions wore lost, including ambergris worth £75.
