EISTEDDFOD CHAIR

HONOUR OF LADY BLEDIBLOE. NEW ZEALAND GIFT. “New Zealand Welsh folk desire to offer as an unconditional gilt a bardic chair for the 1935 Eisteddfod to celebrate the first occasion in the history of New Zealand on which a Welsh lady—Lady Bledisloe—became the first lady in the land,” states a cablegram dispatched last week by Mr J. Morgan Davies, president of the' Welsh Society of Wellington to the Royal National Eisteddfod, which opens to-day at Llanelly. The national festival is followed with great interest by Welsh people all over the world. This year delegates from Australia and New Zealand will be present. The gift of a Bardic Chair of New Zealand kauri has been offered to the excutive of the Gorsedd of Bards, of the Isle of Britain, together with a cash price of £25 for the best ode submitted for the Eisteddfod of 1935. The chairing ceremony is one of the oldest institutions of the Eisteddfod, dating back to the time of the Druids. Originally a bardic organisation, the Eisteddfod has extended its influence to music and all other arts.
