CANADA-NEW ZEALAND

TRADE RELATIONS. [United Preu Association—By CableCopyright. I Ottawa, March 7. Mr P. F. Casgrain, Liberal Whip, in the House oi Representatives today moved an amendment to the conservative amendment proposing that instead of the Order-in-Count 11 extend ing the Australian treaty to New Zealand being rescinded the Government should proceed with negotiations for a treaty and the Order-in-Council should continue in force in the meantime. Previously the Minister of Finance, Mr Dunning, said that the Conservative amendment was an effort to make political capital out of the hearing, which is not yet complete, before tho Tariff Board. There was no definite treaty at the moment but the Government had already indicated to New Zealand its uesiie to enter into a real treaty. On the resolution before the House being read in New Zealand, it would, if passed, injure tho chances of future negotiations.

Mr Dunning announced that he was asking his colleagues to move an amendment to tho amendment, which Mr Casgrain did.

Mr E. W. Rowe, Conservative, previously stated that the New Zealand agreement was so serious that from Kingston (Ontario) to Montreal dairy farms could be bought for from 25 to 40 dollars an acre. Mr Dunning declared that the Conservatives were getting the dairy farmers worked up about the question and at the same time conveying the impression that Canada contemplated closing trade channels with New Zealand without notice. He remarked that an Imperial Economic Conference would be held in London in September, and declared: u We would like to approach the conference with our sister dominions without having hit one of them over the head.”
