N.Z. POULTRYMEN

MEET IN CONFERENCE

MARKETING METHODS DISCUSSED.

CO OPERATION OF PRODUCERS

[Per Pres. Association.]

Dunedin, March 6.

The main discussion at the Dominion Poultrymen’s Conference yesterday afternoon was on organisation. - Mr Oswald Kiley, the first president, expressed the opinion that pre ducers could not get a payable pi ice for export eggs without a Government guarantee.

Mr Ironside, of the Department of Agriculture, expressed the hope ’hat the conference would evolve a better marketing method. At present eggs were sold in one bundle —good, bad and indifferent. He could not say anything about the exports guarantee, but the local customer was the poultrymen’s best friend.

Other speakers stressed the difficulty in getting producers to pull together. Mr F. C. Brown, the chief poultry instructor, said that they were now up against dear feed, and increased production, and unfortunately the export market did not look bright so that organisation was imperative The Hon G. W. Forbes had obtained a grant of £lO,OOO to assist export trade last season, but unfortunately producers throughout the Dominion did not take full advantage of the position. The local marketing executive and officers of the Department had a scheme, and hoped to be able to throw out suggestions of a workable nature as an outcome of the cun'ference, whereby local trade would be placed on a sounder footing. The Department was out to give the public better eggs. This must bring about greater consumption and lead to the employment of more people in the industry. The following were appointed as sociation representatives on the advis ory committee to report to the Government on the proposals for marketing brought down by the Government economist: Messrs Bates (Wellington), Edgley (Auckland), Hutton (Otago), Bradford (Canterbury).
