HASTINGS AMATEUR CLUB SUCCESSFUL MEETING. A very successful sports meeting was held yesterday evening at Nelson Park by the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. The weather conditions were perfect, and though there was not a large attendance, some keenly contorted races were witnessed. Secondary Schools’ High Jump.Patrick (scr) 1, Milne (scr) 2, Gilbv (3in) 3 Winner’s jump. 4ft lOin. LERMOND BEATEN. WANGANUI MAN OVERTAKES HIM. Wanganui, March 5. Keen interest was manifested in the races at the Wanganui-Taranaki Centre Amateur Athletic Association’s sports meeting to-night, when George Golding (Australia) and Leo Lermond (America) competed. Golding won his event, the 440 yards race, in beautiful style from M. Strange Lermond looked like winning the 1000 yards, but going round the back for the last time D. Evans, who was handy, made a sudden spurt to the leading position and maintained this to win. The time, 2min 18sec, is in the vicinity of a New Zealand record.
