SPRING RACING

MARTON MEETING OPENS TO-MORROW REVIEW OF THE ACCEPTANCES. GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED. The Marton Jockey Club’s Meeting will be held to-morrow and Thursday. This marks the first meeting of the 1929-30 season under the 7st minimum. Local stables are poorly represented; nevertheless, with so many important meetings close at hand much interest is centred in this fixture. Racing to-morrow commences at 11.30 with the TRIAL PLATE. 6 furlongs and 27 yards. (All 8.7).

Kotaki Eka ran a fair fourth at Daunevitke, and tho four-year-old Acre gelding should have benefited by the racing at that meeting. Gleui»on is a fair sort. Juggle was backed heavily at the last Wellington Meeting, to run third. Austerity appeals Last season Equitant, from Tilley’s stable, ran four seconds, showing much pace in his two-year-old races. Retract, after getting an indifferent start at Dannevirke, finished third, full of running. Whenuatonga is a fair sort. This event should find spirited betting, with perhaps the most support forthcoming for Retract, juggle and Austerity.

Next on the programme is the FIRST HACK HURDLES, li mile

Powhin, at present, cannot be recommended with any confidence, and on Dannevirke running Royal Damon does not appeal. Star Shell has recent form. Royal Elin is worthy ot respect. Modern is a likely sort, while Lady Gay ran a fair third on Thursday last. Peshwa is right at the top of his form and has the necessary racing condition. Gleha Bay, when heavily backed at Trenth am, failed, hut the South Aucklandei may make amends this time. Support may be forthcoming for Peshwa, Ciena Bay and Modern, Next to interest is the SPRING HACK HANDICAP.

Hopwood, although a common-look-ing gelding, is really good, and over a mile at Dannevirke finished first lull of running. Royal Black was considered unbeatable by his party last week, but down he went; he may do better to-morrow. Black Maire will have to improve on recent form to have a chance. Fine Acre has the condition. Money Mint is sure of solid support, while Curtsey, on her showing at Trentham in the High-Weight, calls for respect. Calithe won at Ellerslie recently, but Ins failure last Saturday was not encouraging. Favourites may be Fine Acre, Hopwood, and Royal Black.

Gold Cure is making Iris first appeals neo over this distance, hut as lie has won over a mile and is in racing condition, he must be considered. The same applies to Royal Game. Black Mint was awarded a race at Dannevirke, hot his win was far from mOritorins. Mint Leaf has no recent form. Mountain Heath is not likely to be there Barometer is not consistent, but the fact of him having Won the chief flat event at the Paknranga Hunt last’Saturday week speaks in his favour. Nucleus, on her home track, appeals. Discourse may be in need of a race. Kawai;ina was the unlucky one at Danneiike in the mix up in the Ncaglo Memorial. Cold Cure, Nucleus and Barometer may be the favourites.

Next to be decided is the HUNT CUP STEEPLECHASE.

Birkbeck is a fine jumper, but with his big weight he will find his task the most difficult to date. Alaric, who will be bracketed with him, may prove the better of the pair. Sunart’s attempt in the Hurdles at Hastings recently was not impressive. Pikimai is fair. Gilgai does not appeal. Santiago will have very few local supporters. Askari cannot be ignored San Fera will find the last half-mile troublesome. Olympic and Mataipuke, when put over the steeplechase fences at Danngvirke, did not impress. Master Arch is a good fencer and a plodder. Of the nine stone division Uayonnaut reads best. The Alaric-Birkbeck bracket, Rayonnaut and Pikimai may command most support.

Rio de Vai is not likely to cause a great amount of uneasiness. Black Maire is engaged earlier. Goodwill, with a regular horseman on top, may cause trouble. Kahu, on Wanganui reports, may be the favourite. Skyrider is fair. Vinella keeps on knocking. Arrowhead, the winner of the Trial at Hastings, is a good sort. The favourites on the machine may bo Vinella, Arrowhead and Goodwill. The next event claiming attention is the RAILWAY HANDICAP. 6 furlongs 27 yards.

In this race we find many who have not raced for some time, while others are out of their distance, so that those with racing condition may claim most support. Reremoana, despite his age, can still go fast, but he may need a race or two. Prince Humphrey is reported to be galloping well at Takanini. but he may find his stable companion. Eaglet, beating him home. Star Area’s best performances have been over a distance of ground. The same applies to Star Stranger. Monogne may about strip the fittest horse in tne race. Blimp is not recommended Dobbin ran a good race at Dannevfrke for second. Royal Game is most likely to contest the Marton Handicap. Maui and Mouton Treasury are useful. Staghunter cannot be selected just yet. although report has it that this season he will come very near tn reproducing his two-year-old form. Oration is a moody customer. Hopwood may take on this event in preference to hauling his big weight in the Spring Hack. Dobbin, Bonogne and Oration may be the favourites. The first day’s sport concludes with the

Knightlike will not be over-rushed. Last season, as a two-year-old, Glenartney was considered by his trainer, F. Tilley, as most likely to develop into a good three-year-old, and as reports speak well of his present condition the Hunting Song gelding may be seen to advantage to-morrow. Valpre is a speedy Chief Ruler three-year-old filly, and will be coupled with Reremoana. Full Mark goes well, but has not raced of late. Hunting Cry may make a bold bid. Joy Gorin is good up to about five furlongs, but stops at that. Push could gallop fast fast season. Money Mint, if started in this event, will find support. Arrow Boy and Claremore are both speedy. Juggle is not likely to start again, the Trial being his mission. Haviland is fair and at 7.2 appears very well treated. Glenartney, Money Mint and Hunting Cry may find most favour.
