GENERAL NOTES

The first race at Mai ton to-morrow will start at 11.3(1. * * * There are one or two unlikely starters in tho Trial Plate to be run at Marton to-morrow, including Varsity, who has been taken home. There appears every chance of the field being reduced sufficiently to allow ot the event being run off in one division. * • # Gold Money had to bo content, with third place among the sprinters in the Dunedin Handicap at the Pakuranga Meeting. As she is not built on big linn; weight has its effect on Gold Money, but now that the lighter sea Io is in vogue the Paper Money— Miss Ethel mare will be capable of

acting up to her best again. Her three successes in a row over sprint journeys at the end of last season stamped Gold Money as useful. * * * The ex-Hawke’s Bay sportsman Mr D. Potter is evidently a believer in the Gainsborough blood. He is sending down on a visit to Mr H. Hassall’s imported sire Gainscourt a mare by Potoa from Cadence which he recently purchased from Mr W. C Ring. Wiltshire has been taking it easy since his return from his very successful visit to the Grant National Meeting (states the “Waikato Times’’). The Day Comet—Lobelia gelding has thrived on his latest racing and tho respite that has followed. When the time comes he will be ready to again play his part in jumping events. * * * The Lover ran quite a useful race in the Jellicoe Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday. As it was his first start for some time, the Romeo— Ganibode gelding was not strung up, but he is likely to improve quickly from this out. He should, as a result, give a creditable account of himself during the racing of the coming spring. * * « R. E. Thompson will ride Glena Bay at Marton.

Royal Opera, who won a double at Dannevirke, is a representative of a rather famous line. He is by Royal Stag from Soprano, who was by Mensehikoff from Cissy, by Musket from Frailty, by Goldsbrough. Soprano was eighteen years old when she foaled Royal Opera, who was her last living foal, and she died in 1926. Royal Opera, although now a six-year-old, does not seem to have appeared on the Turf until late last season.

There were a few interesting gallops on the local tracks on Saturday morning (states the Wanganui “Herald’’). Paratoo (J. Barry) and Arastar (Farrell) were associated in a spin over three furlongs on the hurdle track. Paratoo iinished a couple of lengths in front in 39sec. On No. 1 track, Zarene was given a couple of rounds at half-pace, finishing fast down the straight. Banket slipped over half a mile at a fast clip. Auctioneer and Warflame were companions in a five furlong flutter. They ran the first quarter in 24 3-5, and three furlongs in 37 1-5, but from there on the pace was slower, and they* took 1.6 lor the full distance, Warflame being a shade in front. Talisker was given a couple of rounds at half-pace, sprinting down the straight. Vertigem went five furlongs, the last three being left behind in 40sec. Valma and Just An Idea sprinted half a mile in 52), finishing together. Stai Areat gave Count Palatine a start oi a couple of lengths in a half-mile spin. The pair were together ai the finish, tho time being 52 4-5.,

At the annual meeting of the Wairoa Racing Club, the chair was taken by the president, Mr H De Lautour, there being a large attendance of members. The annual report and balance-sheet were of a very satisfactory nature, the profit in 1929 being £325 IDs. against a loss of £207 in 1921. Whilst formerly tho club owed tho bank £lOOO, there was now a credit of £lO5, the club being £2OOO better off than four or five years ago. The report contained a number of references to the proposed Gaming Act Amendment, and the opposition shown in some quarters. A number of necessary amendments to the rules were made, and the following officers were elected in addition to the president Vice-pr-esidents, Messrs W. J. Hill and A. G. Nolan; treasurer, Air A. J. Anderson; committee for 1930 season. Messrs T. Byrne, W. H. Brady. A. J. Devery, B. Smyth, S. Crarer, N. Law. P. H. Summerfield, J. R. Gillespie, A. T. Carroll, and A. E. Beckett. Messrs A. H. Unwin and IV. A. Crarer were appointed auditors.
