INDIAN TOUR
BY BRITISH LABOURITES REPORT ON WORKING CONDTIONS. PROPOSAL TO LINK UP TRADES UNIONS. [United Press Assn.—By CableCopyright.) [Australian Press assu. -United Service.) - 1 - 1 - \ (Received 28. 9.30 a.m.) London, May 26. The urgency of taking the mighty step of linking up the British and Indian trade union movements is stressed in the report of the Labourites, Messrs Purcell and Hallsworth, who recently returned from a tour of India on behalf of the Trade Union Congress. They paint a melancholy picture of bad housing conditions. The vast majority of workers do not receive more than a shilling a day, are half starved, and horribly housed. The report estimates the total strength of trade unions at 200,000 compared with 25,000,000 capable of organisation. The report describes the tea plantations of Assem as virtually slave plantations, where a human trinity of husband, wife and child brings in no more than 1/3 a day. It expresses the opinion that it is possible with the presence of tremendous forces of public opininn which, sooner or later, will be applied, there will be a great expansion of manufacturing activity.
