Despite rain bavins fallen practically every day tor the past lortnight, it was possible to commence play in the Australian-Poverty Bay game to-day. The wicket had been covered tor the last three days, but was soft and slow, with the outfield dead. Australia sent the homesters in and painfully slow batting followed. Morton proved destructive, capturing the first six wickets, which fell for 39. J. Scholium batted 106 minutes lor 16 runs, giving a patient display of correct cricket. The only bright spot was the last wicket stand, which added 20 in 23 minutes. Turbitt, a schoolboy, batted freely for 18 not out, glancing anti cutting like a veteran. Hain fell at 3.30, compelling an early closure of play, when the home side’s total stood at 75 for nine. They batted 153 minutes. 57 overs being bowled. Blackie and Morton trundled almost throughout, the latter sending down 23 overs and the former 18. Grimmett and Oldfield were omitted from the visitors' team.
