POOR RESPONSE TO APPEAL. . FUNDS FAR SHORT OF THE NECESSARY. Wellington, March 20. At a. meeting of the council of the Olympic Association to-night, the results of the appeal for funds were considered. It was stated tuat although the closing date was past a great number of returns were still outstanding and they had no idea what the total would be. but a member stated that there was every indication that the amount would fail very far short of what was expected, so that it would take the council all its time to send even six of the team. It was decided to write to the Governing bodies of sports staling that unless the necessary funds were in sight bv March 31 the proposal to send a team to this year’s games would be dropped. The amount to hand was only £350. so that another £l5OO was required to send a team of six away. There did not appear any likelihood of sending any rowing representatives

Stocklcy reduced the ladies’ New Zealand hundred metres backstroke record by three seconds, covering the distance in 85 seconds. LINDSAY AND MISS MILLER AT WELLINGTON. Wellington, March 20. Two of the three swimmers to go to the Olympic Games competed at a carnival at the tepid baths to-night. The 220 yards and the 110 yards invitation handicap events wore both won bv D. P Lindsay, who conceded the limit man emht seconds in the slimier distance an,l 15 in the longer Miss K.
