“STARS’” SALARIES
ENORMOUS DEMANDS "LONDON CAN’T AFFORD IT.” THEATRE MANAGERS UP AGAINST IT. IBy Cable — Press Assn. — Copyright.) (Received 30, 12.55 p.m.) London, Sept. 29. The enormous salaries demanded by theatrical stars are the centre of a controversy. The managers, Messrs. J. L. Sacks and Herbert Clayton, say it is entirely disproportionate to the prices of seats and the theatres’ capacity to pay £3OO to £4OO a week and to shorten runs would upset the financial balance of the artists, authors and managers. The public suffer as the admission must' remain high. They had no objection to £l5O a week but beyond that is impossible. Evelyn Laye, one of the highest paid artists, says: "You sell your goods at the highest possible price. Mr Sacks offered me £360 a week for his new pity but I am considering an offer from America." In reply to this, Mr Sacks said, "1 told Evelyn that if she can get £6OO a week from America to take it, London can't afford it. Whenever 1 consider an unknown star from Arne rica the first thing is to cable 1000 dollars a week. It is rendering the running of a theatre impossible.’’
