COMPASSIONATE ALLOWANCE
NAPIER WIDOW’S PETITION HOUSE COMMITTEE’S RECOMMENDATION. (Special to “Tribune.”) Wellington, Sept. 28. The Public Petitions A to L Committee of the House of Representatives yesterday recommended that the petition of Catherine Jane Cook, of Napier, praying for a compassionate allowance in respect of the death of her husband should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. Mr. John Mason said the petitioner was the widow of a man who was killed while undergoing imprisonment in Mt. Eden gaol. There was no compensation payable by the Prisons Department for a man who lost his life in that way. It seemed to the speaker that there was some delect in the prisons regulations in that it contained no provision for the payment of compensation to a widow in such a case as this.
Affer outlining* the facts of the case as stated m the petition, Mr. Mason concluded by saying that some contribution for the widow should be made.
Mr. W. E. Parry (Auckland Central) supported the petition, contending that it was an obligation of the State to pay compensation in such a case. The report of the committee was laid on the table.
