THE PETROL TAX
AN AUCKLAND PETITION
REFERRED TO GOVERNMENT MATTER OF POLICY INVOLVED. (Special to “Tribune.”) Wellington, Sept. 28. It has been suggested that legislation proposing the imposition of a petrol tax may be introduced this session and reference to this matter was made in the House of Representatives yesterday. The Public Petitions A to L Committee recommended, in connection with an Auckland petition, in .favour of the petrol tax, that, as matter of policy was involved, the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration.
Mr. A. Harris (Waitemata) saithere was general feeling that all subsidiary taxes might be abolished in favour of the petrol tax. He thought the committee was favourable to the petition but as it was a matter of policy it was not thought fit to make favourable recommendation.
He referred to the objections of people who had milking machines and said he thought that that would be broken down as when hydro-electric, ity developed in the Dominion the imposition of the petrol tax would impose no hardship and he thought it was a fair and reasonable means of taxing the motorist.
