The Northerners’ advance southwards continues unrestricted. Foreign observers in Pukow, which is the Yangtsze terminus of the Tientsin-Pukow railway, anticipate the Northerners will reoccupy Pukow - within a couple of days. r* The Southerners are reported to be restless and discontented. They have fiot been paid for several months. Recent minor revolts testify to the unrest existing among the Nationalist forces. Sun Chuan-fang, erstwhile OverT of Shanghai and five south-east-ern provinces, who recently sustained defeat in the Nanking fighting, is again leading the anti-Southern forces, and is confidence that ne will defeat the Southerners, and drive the Nationalist Government from Nanking.—(,A. and N.Z.) SWATOW HELD BY REDS. Hong Kong, Sept. 27. Swatow is now controlled by the Reds. The situation apparently is cleveloping worse. Looting has broken out. Anti-foreignism is feared. BASIL RILEY’S FATE NEW LIGHT ON MASTERY Shanghai, Sept. 16 A Chengchow resident, who has arrived here, throws a new light on the disappearance ot Mr F. Basil Riley, “The Times” correspondent. Mr. Riley, he says, left his residence for the purpose of keeping an appointment at the Y M.C A., prior to a visit to the Christian village, but he never reached th© Y.M.C.A.. though that required a walk of only 15 minutes. Al] the Chinese in* Chengchow are of opinion that Mr. Riley has been killed, though how. when and why they cannot or will not say. The “North China Daily News,” commenting to-dav on the possibilities, avers that Marshal Feng Yiihsiang must know Mr Riley’s fate, on the ground that it is impossi for any foreigner to disappear in Chiiia. even though equipped with Chinese clothes and a knowledge of the language.
