MOTOR BODY BUILDERS
OBJECT TO NEW TARIFF. Wellington Sptember 28. A plea for the protection of skilled labour in the New Zealand motor body building industry was made to the Customs Minister by a denotation representing the Coach Workers’ Employees’ Federation to day. which asked for reconsideration of the Droposed reduction of five per cent in tlie tariff on unassembled motor bodies.
The Hon. W. D. Stewart, after explaining that the reduction resulted from representations bv the British Trade Commission, said he was extremely doubtful of those the denotation represented being able to hold their own against the unassembled car people. They must not shut their eyes to world conditions. They should take the view that, from the assistance already given them, there was no hostile intention on ihe Dart of the Government and that the oro posal was not framed at the instigation of Americans with whom he had had no conversations. The matter was under review, ajid the question of making a modification of the proposal would be considered.
