WAIPUKURAU.

GENERAL NEWS ANO NOTES (Own Correspondent.) Members of the Orphans’ Club have made special preparations for the annual “ladies’ night,” and a very interesting programme is promised for to-night in St. Mary's Hall. A heavy southerly gale set in yesterday mortung and continued almost without cessation throughout the day. also foi the greater part of the night resulting in flood conditions. The Tuki Tuki river is in a highly swollen state and in the vicinitv of the racecourse, also adjacent to Farm road, a large tract of land is under water. The watertshles in the town have been in a flooded state, with miniature streams running down’ moot of the highways and the paths submerged. The weather is very cold. REFEREES ’ ASSOCIATION. A general meeting of members of the Central Hawke’s Bay Rugby Referees’ Association was held in Waipukuran last night, Mr. J. O’Connor (president) in the ehair. Considerable correspondence of a routine nature was received and dealt with. The secretary submitted an interim balance-sheet for the season, and this showed the receipts to have totalled £23 2/4, including £l5 granted by the Central Hawke’s Bay Sub-Union, £2 4/4 brought forward 1925-26, £5 6/donations (£3 6/- Mr. Colin Scott, and £2 Bir George Hunter, M.P., patron), and 12/- subscriptions. Kirby, who has left the district. The secretary (Mr. D. P. Dinnon) was voted a small bonus by way of placing on record appreciation of the very able manner in which he had carried out his duties. The chairman thanked the members for their loyal co-operation in the work of the Association, and eonEstulated Mr. H. M. Carr on being soared by a representative refereeing appointment under the jurisdiction of the Hawke’s Bay Union. > ANNUAL RE-UNION. The weather was very unpropitious for the annual re-union of members of the Central Hawke’s Bay Bugby Referees’ Association held Subsequent to the general meeting last night, but there was a representative atiendance in the Masonic Hall. Apologies for absence were forwarded by Messrs W. J. Wood and G. Cooper, chairman and secretary respectively of the Subanion and G.E. Fowler. The following toast list was hon oared:—“The King " "New Zealand Bugby Referees’ Association’' (Mr D. P. Dinnan—Mr P. R. Smyrk), "Central Hawks’s Bay Bugby Sub Union" (Mr A. C. Holms—Mr J. O’Connor); "Clubs and Players” (Mr L. J. Taylor—Messrs G. Smales and J. T. M. Piki); "The Press” (Mr T. Costello—Mr Holms, editor of "Press"); "Our Worthy Secretary ' (Mr F. Polhill—Mr Dinnan); "Ve teran Referees and Players" (Mr A. E. Nicholson—Messrs Polhill .and Taylor); "Central H.B. Referees’ As sedation" (Mr W. b. Thompson— Messrs O’Connor and Dinnan); "The Timekeeper” (Mr bmyrk—Mr Bales;; "The Ladies" (Mr Polhill—Messrs

J, Haycock and Piki); “The Chairman" (Mr Holms —Mr O T CB3iior); and " The Paiiiist" (Chairman —Mr Haycock). The toaat.list was interspersed with vocal items also reminiscences of the Rugby field. Advantage was taken of the occasion to further mark the good fellowship engendered during several Masons of occupancy of the officers of President Referees appointed and Union representative by Mr A. C. Holms, who retired recently owing to the pressure of other duties, also as the president and states express appreciation of the entire satisfaction afforded by the officers as well as impartial discharge of the duties. Mr O’Connor followed up a very eulogistic tribute by presenting Mr Holms with a pocket wallet as a token of the members’ esteem, and the health of the recipient was heartily toasted. In reply the recipient said that it was more than sufficient recompence for his activities (which had given him pleasure by reason of the loyalty displayed) that they had elected him a life member, but he deeply appreciated their tri-' bates to a phase of service that was only a follow-on of lifiting Rugby keenness.
