SEAMAN FATALLY BURNED. AUCKLAND TRAGEDY. Auckland, Sept. 26. Matthew Wishart, who was trapped by the flames in a fire which occurred in a house in Hower street on Sun-

day morning and was rescued in an uncconscious state and severely burned, died later in hospital. Mrs Hooton. the wife of the tenant rushing upstairs to awaken the sleepers. roused all except Wishart. in the vicinity of whose room the fumes were suffocating. He could not bo aroused by calling and the room was unapproachable. A brigadesman found Wishart unconscious on his bed. 'lhe fire was confined to the room in which it orginated.

An overnight telegram staled: Very severe burns to the face and hands were sustained by Matthew Wishart. a seamen, aged 55 years, through'being trapped in a burnin',' room in the supper storey of a wooden house at 25 Howe street shortly after nine o’clock on Sunday morning. Wishart was in all-health, and consequently was unable to escape from the building. He was found by the firemen in an unconscious state on the floor of the room, and was immediately conveyed to hospital. The house was tenanted by W. G. Hooton. with whom Wishart lived. Two rooms on the supper storey were extenslvOT damaged by the outbreak.
