BIG POLICE RAID

32 MEN ARRESTED

DALMATIAN’S PREMISES ENTERED. WHAT DETECTIVES FOUND. Auckland, Sept. 26. Thirty-two men were arrested at. 10.30 o’clock on Saturday evening as the result of a raid by the police on premises in Victoria street occupied uy a Dalmatian. When Senior-Detective Hammond approached the gate at the rear ol the premises a torch was flashed in his face by the occupier whom he seized around the neck. Another man came to the captive’s assistance, and after a scuffle the detective forced an entrance. x’he occupier called out loudly in Dalmatian. The detectives found about 20 men in a large room, some rushing upstairs and others attempting to escape by the front door, but tho premises were completely surrounded by police and only one escaped though several climbed on to the verandah and roofs of adjoining premises. The detectives found tables covered with heavy cloths and chairs for about 20 men and dice and dice boxes, cards, and counters. The Dalmatian, named Marian Glavas. was charged with keeping a common gaming house, and 31 men with being on the premises without lawful excuse. SOME FINED—SOME REMANDED Auckland, Sept. 20. The 32 men arrested in connection with Saturday night’s raid were before the Court this morning. Some were fined £3 and some remanded on the charge of being found on premises without lawful excuse.
