The death occurred yesterday of Mr Hoani (Jew) Ratima, a well-known Maori of Paki Paki, at the age of 54 years. The funeral will take place on Sunday next.
A return issued by the Sydney Water Board shows that during the year 10,939 new buildings were completed and connected with water in the city and suburbs, compared with 12,190 in tlie previous year, which was the highest yet recorded. Buildings in 1925 cost" £11,587,149, compared with £14,346,071 in 1924.
The “Daily Telegraph” states that it is understood ex-King Ali has left Jeddah for Baghdad. Ibn Saud will probably make a triumphal entry today.
The presence of a large number of visitors from the country, as well as from outside districts, gave Hastings a carnival appearance this morning, but the Christmas Eve crowd commenced to parade the business streets at about 2 p.m. and steadily increased as the afternoon advanced, giving promise of a great concourse during the evening, with the proportionate benefit to trade. The police warn children and youths that the explosion of crackers and others fireworks in the thoroughfares is expressly prohibition and it is to be hoped that this notification will be taken to heart by those concerned.
