BLAZE AT WHAKATANE.
BUSINESS BLOCK DESTROYED. Whakatane, Dec. 24. Fire at Matata early this morning destroyed. Wooden 'business block in the man street. Property and stock valued at about £6500 were destroyed. The losses are Mrs Leo’s store and dwelling, insurance £1500; Mayor’s fancy goods store insurance unknown; Miss Starger’s, confectionery shop, insurance amount not available. • A bucket brigade did good work and saved the hotel building, which was only fifteen feet from the burned storeroom. The hotel block is owned by Mr W. Montgomery and Lee’s store by Brut Bros.
At about 11.15 this morning the Napier Fire Brigade received a call to Poraite. On arrival a big grass fire was found to be in progress on Mr. Lowry North’s property. Though the fire reached right up to his motor shed and to a small pine plantation, no damage was done.
