DIVOTS.

Dug by ‘The Del ver.” At Ellerslie, M. McCarten will be on Shining Armour. The Banker, Seatown, Tukia, Limited, Glenross, and Mandane in their engagements. J. Barry is to ride Commendation, Mint Leaf. Te Monanui. Oration, and Automne. D. C. Watt’s mounts include Horomea and Kiosk. P. Mcßrearty, who was successful on Many Colours at Woodville, will be in the saddle again at Awapuni next Saturday. J. M. Cameron arrived in Wellington by the Maunganui from Sydney yesterday and returned to Hastings by yesterday’s midday train. He was anxious to race The Hawk during his stay, but transport arrangements could not be made, and the Martian gelding was left in Sydney.

The name “Larious” that reached us here as that of an acceptor for the Queen’s Plato at Ellerslie will probably not have been recognised by readers as a mutilation of “Luxurious.” Finelli was stretched out over seven furlongs at Ellerslie on Tuesday morning. She is said to be very well just now. Black Cruiser was given a school over the hurdles in the centre of the course at Ellerslie on the same day, and jumped well. King’s Guard, who figures anlong the hurdlers for the Auckland meeting, is regarded as a really good sort. He won a couple of races very easily in minor company on Labour Day, and it will be interesting to see how he faros with the better class he will meet at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

Thursby, a three-year-old in P. Conway’s stable, says “Whalebone.” has been galloping well at Ellerslie recently and he may be seen to advantage before the season is very far through. Licinius is not being mentioned at all in couneetdon with the Fitzhorbert Handicap at Awapuni, despite the fact that he was a well-backed candidate in the Stewards’ Handicap and ran an excellent race into fifth place. He is now very decidedly on the log. but for all that is a sprinter of some quality. Decently ridden, at 7.11 he appears to have more than a remote chance on Satu relay.—“Vedete.” Glentruih was given a sprint over four furlongs at Ellerslie on Tuesday morning. She did not appear to have her full Railway weight up. but her performance was the best of the morning over the distance. She is said to have gone so nicely that it is only a matter of her keeping right to reproduce the brilliant form she showed a season or two ago. Lvsander appears to be an improved colt since he won the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie. He won very well over five furlongs on Tuesday morning, and should be very fit on bhc day the Groat Northern Foal Stakes is decided. However, ho has a good one to beat in Commendation. E. George left New Plymouth on Tuesday for IG.lorslie, with T<> Alonanui, Oration. Hipo and Mint Leaf. Te Monanui’s Auckland Cup preparation is reported to have proceeded satisfactorily since ho raced at Woodville. Comic Song, who was cast in his box after his sensational win in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton last month, appears to have escaped without serious injury. His connections have been rather concerned over the Winkie gelding, but he, was sound aftei* working at Wingaiui a couple of days ago. Dominion-bred ponies are very much in the limelight just now over Sydney way. At the Victoria Park meeting last week Winter Time (Joculator Ermine) and Ransack (Solferino —Ru'd) each scored a further success. The former won her preliminary heat and the run-off in the Fourteen-one Handicap. while Ransack put up the same record in the big event of the dav the £lOOO J.T). Gold Cup. Ransa'-k was a big odds-on favourite in his in his final run. but Winter Timo, though a short-priced favourite in her heat, started at quite a nice price in the final. The former is now well up in the handicaps, her weight in the event mentioned being 8.12, hut Winter Timo’s load in the run-off was only 6.10 ; Wassail, formerly raced in the Dominion by Mrs. lan Simson. is to be submitted at auction in Melbourne next month with the others owned by Mr. T. M. Burke, who is leaving for England shortly. ?Jr. Bnrke has never got a race out of the Elysian—Merrydale gelding, for which lie paid a big four-figure price. Special acknowledgment has to be made of receipt from the Waipukurau Jockey Club of a complimentary press ticket for its Boxing Day meeting. A: though previously a quite customary and regular thing from secretaries of that club, and at all times from secretaries of other Hawke’s Bay Clubs, and even of some mu-li further afield, it is the first time that this common courtesy has been extended to the “Tribune” by the gentleman who has now for son e years held that office at Waipukurau. It is for this reason that the occasion is one worthy of particular notice. He has apparently had a jol: from somewhere, and it is probably the joltcr, not he, whom we have to thank for a revival, after so long a lapse* of time, of’so wcl 1 cstablis’ied a litthpiece of conventional civility. Those with knowledge of circumstanees wi l ! have little difficulty in assigning a m.. five for past exclusion of this paper from a petty privilege no doubt enjoyed by every other within fifty or a hundred miles.

I Some notes by “Archer” (N.Z. “Herald”) on the coming ijaces at I Ellerslie:—

I M. AlcCarten will have the mount on Royal lea. in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. 1 It is stated that R. McTavish will ride King Mcrv in the Railway Handicap. H. Wiggins will ride Merry Damon iu the Railway Handicap. With a division arranged for in connection with the A.R.C. Railway Handicap some little doubt exists as to the procedure. It will be treated as two separate races, the stakes allotted (£1400) being divided—first, second and third receiving half the sum arranged for in a non-divided field. The totalisator will be opened separately on each race. Judging by his appearance. Lysander lias trained on splendidly since ■winning at Ellerslie m November. Lysander is a colt that should be making improvement every week, and he should test Commendation in the Great Northern Foal Stakes for he is a very smart beginner and has lots of speed.

That good mare Glentrnin has reached Ellerslie in splendid order. There can be no doubt that she is coming on again, and the indications are that she is recovering her former dash. In the division of the field in connecrTon with the Railway Handicap, the two top-weights. Reremoana and Glcntruin. who are weighted equal (9st 71b), figure in the first division. This has been brought about by reason of the necessity of bracketing Lady Cavendish with Reremoana. Tamateto has the record of winning the Palmerston North Stakes in four successive years, and he is expected to again figure as a contestant when the race comes up lor decision at Awapuni next Monday. The son of Absurd has incurred a 51b penalty and he will therefore have to carry 9.6. The three-year-old division is well represented in the Railway Handicap to be run at Ellerslie on Boxing Daveleven of that age figuring in the race, viz.. Money Order, Mimetic. Automne, Merry Damon. Air Queen, Gold Acre. Lady Cavendish, Kmr Lu. Oration, Nincompoop, and Appellant. It is somewhat rare to find a horse that has attained the age of five years without a single winning performance to lus credit figuring as an acceptor for an important event. That, however, is the incident that has to he related in regard to Kamehamcha and the Auckland Cup. The Demosthenes ge'.dmg has only once fimsned m a place. . . One of the old Turf identities of New Zealand was removed this week by the sudden death of Mr. R. W. Paterson, of ’Wellington, in his 68th year. He was always prominently associated with the Turf, and owned and raced some good horses. He won the C.J.C. Winter Cup with Waiwhera in 1902, and the Hawke’s Bay Cup with Ringman m 1903. He also raced Doctor Bill and Lissa over hurdles, but his tame came through Solution, one of the best mares over seen m this country. She won the Wellington Stakes (1905) and a handicap the same afternoon, the Stewards’ Handicap (1905). and Members’ Handicap at the same meeting, and the Hawke’s Bay Cup of 1906. Then she went to Australia, where she won the Chelmsford Stakes, Metropolitan Handicap, and Craven Plato, being then sold to Air. John Wren for 4doogns. Amongst the last horses raced Mr. Paterson was Penates, who won. him a C.J.C. Easter Handicap.
