POISONED LIQUOR.

HIGH MORTALITY IN NEW YORK. ONE DRINK IN FIFTY SAFE. (Received 21, 9.10 a.m.) New York, Dec. 20. Five hundred persons died from poisoned liquor this year, according to official returns covering New York City, which admit that only one dnnK in fifty is safe. Fifty thousand samples were analysed, of which 98 per cent contained poison. AH except one sample in a hundred was manufactured here from denatured alcohol. Forty million gallons of the latter were used to manufacture bootleg liquor during the year.—(A. and N.Z.)
