CORRESPONDENCE.

It must be distinctly understood that we are not to be identified with the opinions expressed by correspondents in our columns (By Cable—Press Association— Copyright.' THE CANADIAN CHALLENGER. (To tho Editor.) Sir —ln your yesterday’s issue you state that the Canadian Challenger could not have berthed at the Breakwater during her recent visit to tins port because there was no berth available. The Harbour Board officials say that this vessel could have been accommodated at the Breakwater and that tho necessary labour was available to have worked her there. L'uithor. it may be pointed out that a representative, Mr. Luke, of the ho. d office of the Canadian Government Shipping Line at Wellington, was in Napier on November 20 and indicated that the Challenger, which was due here on November 28. would work m the roadstead.— Thanking you, 1 am, etc., yours faithfully, y Napier, December 10. 1925.

fin connection with the statement appearing in our columns yesterday concerning the Canadian Onallenger, Mr Higgins may be retorted to the secretary of the Y atei’sidei s’ , n 1(^1 concerning the great shortage of labour as reported. The position was that every available unionist and nonunionist was employed, and that it would have been quite impossible to have got labour. The wool stores were working at maximum PT ess " re J" so ”,< ing out wool to both the Te K « the Rotorua, and could not have loaded out wool in sufficient quantities to have kept four gangs going. When the Canadian Challenger airived both the Ngnkuta and the Kamo as well as the Zingan were at tne Glasgow wharf. No doubt, if sufficient labour had been available either the Ngaknta or the Kamo might have been moved out. and the Challenger given berth. As tilings were, however it was quite correct te sa v that there was no berthage space available at the Brcnkivntor.—Ed. H.B-1-1
