BELOW EXPENDITURE. BRITISH HALF-YEAR DEFICIT. London, Oct. 1. Revenue returns for the first half of the year to September 30 show the re* venue to be nearly £12,000,000 below expenditure, compared with a surplus of £3,000,000 in revenue above expenditure in the corresponding period of 1923. Newspapers give prominence to the figures in view of the Labour administration, but they point out that it is not safe to draw definite conclusions, as the second half-year may possibly alter the position.—(A. and N.Z.) FRANCE ALSO. FACES HEAVY”"SHORTAGE. Paris, Sept. 30. The Budget for 1925 amounts to 32| milliard of francs and there is a deficit of six milliards which M. elemental hopes to cover by saving two milliards by economies and the remainder by taxes on Stock Exchange operations and dealings in real estate 'and commercial bonds. He calculates that payments under the Dawes plan will restore France’s financial stability and bring the franc back to normal.— (Reuter).
