Mr John Henderson, who has been on the staff of the Napier Borough Concil for 25 years, was farewelled yesterday by members of staff on his retirement on superannuation. He has lately filled the position of chairman of the claims committee of the board. Auckland exchanges announce the death, aged 73, of a very old settler, Mrs. Isabella Stewart, wife of Mr. John Stewart, of Opito. Mercury Bay. The deceased lady, was a sister of Mr. A. Mcßae, of Braeside, Tikei Point, and of Mrs. John Duncan, of Elsthorpe. Her parents, with whom she came to the colony in 1864, were for some time settled in Hawke’s Bay in its early days. Miss Vavasour is a niece of the late Sir William Vavasour, Bart., of Hazlewood Castle, and a cousin of Lord Mowbray and Stourton. Mr. Francis Reid is a grandson of Captain John Reid, who served wibli distinction in the 45th Regiment in the Peninsula War, and a grand nephew of the late Sir James Prendergast, Chief Justice of New Zealand. Mr A . E. McGregor, Chief Post master at Napier, who has been transferred to Dunedin, left by the maiJ train this morning.
