MEEANEE.
(Own correspondent). Great regret is expressed here at the death of Mr. Robert Ross, of A_watoto, who was widely and popularly known throughout this district. He was taken suddenly ill a few days ago and was admitted to the Napier Hospital, where, however, he passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 44 years- He was the son of the late Mr. John and Annie Ross, of Greenmeadows, and at one time was employed as a fellmonger at the Paki Paki freezing works. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn their Joss. The funeral will leave Awatoto at one o’clock on Sunday for the Hastings Cemetery. , , „ . The announcement that the Harbour Board ha« appointed Mr. George Nelson reclamation engineer, to confer with Mr .Pufflett, County Council en gineer, on the matter of devising means t-> prevent the flooding of settlers’ properties along Riverbend road, has been haded with much satisfaction. These properties in the past have always been so menaced in flood times, owing to the overflow waters from the swamp at th° back as to render a large portion of the land unworkable, but it is now confidently hoped, now that the Board has taken the matter up, that the sufferings of the settlers in this respect ate over.
