NAPIER-HASTINGS ROAD.
REQUEST TO COUNTY COUNCIL. The laying down of the NapierHastings road is to be urged on; the Hawke’s Bav County Council by the Napier Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber decided on this action last evening. Air. W. P. Griffith, who introduced the proposal, said that it was an expensive road to keep up at present. It was the most used road in Hawke’s Bay, and it would have to be laid down in concrete some time.
Air. Waterhouse (chairman): Would you suggest a concrete road? Mr. Griffith: Yes.
Air. J. W. Norrie said the body to refer to was the Highways Board, who would he taking over the roads. Air. Griffiths said they may have to wait twenty years before the Highways Council could give them a concrete road.
“We ought to be cautious,” said Mr. McLernon. “The Council has done as much as it can, and has administered the affairs of the county as well as any other County Council in New Zealand. We should be careful about pressing unduly for a concrete road, when there is such a passable road in existence. If the Council goes ahead with this road, th4> outlying portions of the county will have to suffer. They need better access.” Air. A. Hobson said the rateable value of the property through which this road passed was the greatest in the district, and he did not think the outlying portions contributed much towards its upkeep. Mr. Griffiths asserted that there were better roads in Taranaki than there were in Hawke’s Bay.
