GRADING AND SALARIES.
NEW SCALE FOR TEACHERS. ENDORSED BY EDUCATION BOARD. “This new scale is going to prevent the present frequent changes in staffs at our schools, particularly those in the towns.” This announcement was made at yesterday’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board by the Secretary (Air. W .L. Dunn) consequent on the receipt from the Department of suggestions for a new scheme of salaries for teachers. « “Some teachers will suffer, others will benefit, and others again will stand still,” continued Air. Dunn. “AVe ought heartily to endorse this scheme, but, at the same time, we should see that all appointments made already for 1924 are honoured according to the terms of the appointment.” Mr. Dunn was authorised to reply on behalf of the Board, members considering that he was well up in the matter of salaries. THE DEPARTMENT’S SCHEME. According to the Department’s scheme, grades of salaries for assistants are reduced from seven to three with exceptions in certain cases. In making the revision, it was found necessary to differentiate between the scales for men and womne. Staffing is the same as at present, except that the temporary additional assistants in lieu of pupil teachers in schools of grades A’.D., VI.B. and A’ll.JMve been made permanent additions td’qhfe staff. With regard to district high- schools, it is proposed to grade them. on the primary department average only, instead of on the primary and secondary department average as at present.
