HON. J. C. COATES.
VISIT TO NAPIER. LOCAL BODY DEPUTATIONS. In view of the visit of the Minister of Public Works (Hun. J. G. Coates) to Napier next week, various bodies in Napier have been busy arranging for deputations to wait on him. The Thirty Thousand Club will urge upon him the desirability of an excursion train to Napier from Woodville on Boxing Day, and for a week of excursion trains' for people from various places down the line. In connection with this latter proposal, it will be remembered that last sumpier there were several large picnic parties to Napier on different dates. Now. the club wishes to have them all in one week, so that it can make comprehensive arrangements for their entertainment. This would also give people the opportunity of staying more than ono day. The Borough Council intends to draw the attention of the Minister to the fart that the approach to the railway station could be considerably improved if trees or a hedge were planted in front, of the coal stacks in Munro street. Then there are several old buildings in Hastings street South, owned by the Railway Department, which are in a dilapidated condition, and which the Council would like to see pulled down. The’ need lor lighting the station with electricity instead of gas as at present will also be pointed out to Mr. Coates. ,
A conference is being held in Napier to-day between Mr. A. E. Jull and tlie Transport Committee of the Chamber of Commerce to arrange a deputation which will urge upon the Minister the necessity for better train ' services in Hawke’s Bay. It is expected that the erection of the new Post Office at Napier will also lie mentioned to the Minister, Some time ago Mr. Coates gave Mr. L- AlcJlvtide, M.P., an assurance that the work would go on as soon as several other urgent cases were disposed of, and the Minister will be asked to confirm this promise. Messrs H. M. Campbell, T. E. Crosse, C« C. Smith and J. S. Orr, on behalf of the Hawke’s Bay County Council, will wait upon the Afinister to discuss with him matters concerning the Dartmoor and Mohaka bridges, Tangoio-Tutira road, county by-laws, and county reserve fund.
