HASTINGS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING.

The Hastings Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. W Hurt) presiding. Crs. F. W. Cook, A. Garnett, T. Clarkson. M. Cohr D. E. Davis. C. Duff, F. Perrin and C. Duff were also present. oi absence was given to Cr« R. Baker.

The following correspondence was dealt with:—

District Land Registrar advised that local bodies will now be allowed to make searches free of charge, as the previous instructions had been canualled. —Received.

Haumoana Beach Committee asked if a deputationrom the society uouki be met by. the council.—To be received at the next meeting of the Finance Committee.

Department of health recommended the council to procure fly circulars, containing propaganda in the direction of promoting the abatement of the fly nuisance during the coming summer.-— Sample copies to be obtained. Westerman and Harvey forwarded their account ior rent of the jaru at rear of their premises to August 31»t, and asked tor a cheque.—liie town clerk said they were still charging 20/a week instead of 15/- a week, as arranged.— Referred to fhe Major with power to act. A. Garnett, re drainage Mr. Fitepatrick’s property, asked permission to connect the new premises in Station • erect to the public sewer with two connections instead oi a* separate connection for each shop.—Referred to the inspector.

RESERVES. Beatson Park.—The Parkvale Progressive Association recently waited on tlie committee, making various tions ior improving the south-west corner of Beatson s Park for use by the public, and the committee recommended : —(a) That the engineer prepare ond submit estimates ior the ptoyision of two pedestrian entrances, one from Sei wood road and one from Park Terrace raod; (b) ior the erection of a temporary fence for a distance of about 12j chains, from Park Tenure road to Seiwood road, to cut off approximately lour acres; (c)lay on waler ior drinking purposes from the i»orottgh supply; (d> sinking of artesian well; (e) tarring and sanuing the depression ; and (f) that the public have the use of the fenced off portion of the park j (g) that we inform th<f tenant that we propose taking an area of approximately lour acres for public use, but that lie may continue to ui*e the balance of the land ir he so wishes.

Mothers’ Rest attendances, etc. — The chairman of the Alothers* Rest (Cr. Maddison) has reported to the cummiiiee that the number of persons wno used the Mothers’ Rest last year was 94(91 The number of visitors from outside the town was 340, The number oi visitors tor August. 1922, was 1074, this being the first month since the budding was opened that the thousand mark has been reached-— Adopted. The Cemetery.—A general clean up of the Hastings Cemetery’ has just been completed, and the work of tarring and sanding of the footpaths is in hand. Steps have been taken to get nd of the rabbits. PUBLIC IJBRARY. In consequence of children interfering with some of tlie exhibits, the committee recommend that the museum be closed at 4 p.m. for the present instead of 5 p.m. The librarian reported that the books recently supplied to the lending depan ment have given general satisfaction. The committee recommend that the horse rail outside the library be removed, and that the question oi effecting repairs to the old library building stand over in the meantime.
