MILLION DECREASE LAST YEAR. (Special to “Tribune.”) Wellington, Sept. 20. An actual decrease of 1,062,772 in the sheep of the Dominion at 30th April last as compared with the previous year is shown in the return presented to Parliament. The total number of sheep is 22,222,259. th« North Island flocks numbering 12,095,805. a decrease of 678,518, and the South Island 10,126,454, a decrease of 384,254. I The flocks of New Zealand are distributed thus:— Auckland, 1,705,155. Napier and Gisborne. 5,625,000. Wellington and West Coast 4,765,649. Marlborough, Nelson and Westland, 1,344,444. Canterbury and Kaikoura, 4,584,841. Otago, 4,197,169. The suggestion that sheep returns should be made public earlier was made by Mr. Glenn (Rangitikoi). Mr. Glenn said the returns were made up to the end of April, but. owing to having first to be presented to the House their public appearance was delayed. It would assist merchants materially if they could learn earlier the increase or decrease in flocks to enable them to order approximately the reauired number of wool packs. The Hon. W. Nosworthy replied that he would endeavour in the future to have the returns made public as early as possible.
