FOR STEALING GOLF BALLS. (Special to “Tribune.”) Wellington, Sept. 20. Mr Holland (Buller) recently asked the Minister of Justice whether he has seen the report in the ‘ ‘ Grey River Argus” to the ffect that three boys were recently sentenced by a magistrate to be whipped. He explained that three bosy, for theft of golf balls from a hut, were ordered to be whipped by a constable. The report concludes: “One boy, supposed to be the ringleader, although the second youngest, was ordered to strip and lay on the floor on a blanket while the constable wielded the rod for the six strokes he was supposed to got. After this business was finished he arrived home bleeding freely in places. Pieces of the skin were cut clean from the flesh as large as an inch long. Weals showed up 10 inches or 12 inches in length, extending from the bottom of the spine to down over the thigh. The next day he had to be taken to a doctor to get medical attention. The Hon E. P. Lee replied to-day that the matter is being thoroughly investigated by the Inspector of Police in charge of the district, and the father of the boy in question is being allowed every opportunity to bring forward all available evidence. When the inquiry is completed the honourable gentleman will be fully informed of the result.
