AUCKLAND'S WAR MEMORIAL.

While other cities and many of the towns of the Dominion are still discussing the form of war memorial to be instituted with funds already collected, Auckland long since came to an almost unanimous conclusion to erect in the Domain a museum building which would fittingly perpetuate the memory of those whose lives were given in the cause. That it should be something impressive is shown by the fact that a total expenditure of some £200,000 was and is contemplated. Towards this £122,000 has already been secured, of which £25,000 is a Government subvention, a like amount has been, donated by the local Savings Bank trustees out of surplus funds, and £72,000 has been contributed by some sixty of the leading business institutions and firms and individual citizens. Now that financial stress is easing a little, a set campaign throughout the province is being initiated for the raising of the remaining £78.000. and the committee appointed have little fear of its complete success. The competitive architectural designs for the building that have been received are now in course of being judged, and, when a decision is reached, are to be placed on public exhibition, to which citizens are to be admitted on payment of some small entrance fee, to go towards the fund. Altogether the northern city is showing an appreciation that is fully in keeping with the purpose that is in view.
