PARTIAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN.

THURSDAY’S PHENOMENON The partial eclipse of the sun next Thursday will be visible throughout New Zealand, but as the greatest phase will occur about sunset, it will be possible to observe only the first portion of the eclipse. The circumstances of the eclipse for Wellington are as under:— Eclipse begins 4.52 p.m. Greatest phase 5.45 p.m. Sunset 5.45 p.m. The magnitude of the eclipse at Wellington is O.GB, that is to say, about two-thirds of the sun’s diameter will he obscured at sunset. As the path of totality of this eclipse lies northward of New Zealand, the magnitude will be greatest m tho north, and will decrease southwards. Although the southern districts will see a comparative small eclipse, they will have a slightly longer view of the phenomenon. A solar eclipse is caused by the dark body of th? moon coming between the earth and the sun. In this particular eclipse the moon will make its first appearance at the apparent bottom Of the sun’s disc, and will appear to move upwards, obliterating in its course the nortliern or right-hand portion of the sun. People wishing to view the phenomenon cannot do better than station themselves on some high locality commanding a good view of the western horizon. Smoked or otherwise darkened glass must lie used lor observing the eclipse, and on no account should the sun be looked at without sufficient protection for the eyes, or permanent injury to the sight may result.
