Dr. and Mrs Water worth have returned to Napier Mrs T. E. Crosse left Hastings by the mail train this morning for Palmerston North on a holiday. Mr. G. J. The death took place at Wellington on Friday last of Mr. John Bennie, an old and highly esteemed resident of Wanganui, who had attained his 79th year. A private cable has been received from Mrs Frank Nelson stating that she and her family have returned to London from the Continent “ail well.” Mr. J. H. Grigg, of Ellison road, Hastings, who underwent an operation to his eyes at Lyndhurst private hospital, is progressing as well as can be expected. Widespread protests are being made throughout the United States against the return to England of Commander Evangeline Booth, of the Salvation Army of America, who has been ordered home by Genet-al Booth after 18 years’ sendee there. At last week’s meeting of the Wellington Presbytery, the Rev. B. Hutson gave notice that he intended to resign from the charge of Brooklyn and to retire from the active work of the church. Mr. Joseph Bailey Mackay, Canterbury district manager of the Ocean Accident Company. Dunedin, has been appointed to the dual position of clerk and treasurer to the Lake County Council and Queenstown Borough Council, out of 27 applicants. The deaths occurred last Thursday of two very old pioneer settlers (k the West Coast of the South Island, in the persons of Mrs. Mary. Ann Sheppard, a resident) Of the coast of between 60 and 70 years, and aged 90 years, and Mrs. Mary Sullivan, aged 85 years, a resident of Greymouth of over 35 years. She arrived at Hokitika in 1866. The Rev. Alexander Grant, of Dannevirke. who has been a member of the Hawke’s Bay Presbytery for the past 40 years, on Saturday w as the recipient of a cheque for £370, being the freewill offering of his congregation and other Presbyterians in Southern Hawke’s Bay and friends as a token of their love and appreciation of his past ministrations. On Friday afternoon at the Hastings Central School, the staff met to bid farewell to Mrs. Tindall, whose services are not now required at the school on account of a slight reduction in the average attendance. Mr. L. F. Pegler, B.A. (headmaster) spoke of her faithful services to the school during her association with it and expressed regret that her retirement was necessary. On behalf of the staff he presented her with a dainty tea set as a token of their esteem and goodwill. The recipient’s husband returned thanks on her behalf and suitably acknowledged the complimentary remarks made by the headmaster concerning the work of both himself and his wife. The first assistant, Mr. W. Renton, took the opportunity, of expressing the staff’s esteem of their headmaster and extended to him their best wishes during his absence as school inspector. Mr. Pegler appropriately acknowledged the sentiments thus voiced on behalf of the staff.
