AM ERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. New York, September 14. In the tennis tournament at Seabright Patterson defeated M illiams, a member ot the American Davis Cup team, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Richards defeated Anderson, 6-2, 6-4. 7-5.—(A. and In the first sot of the PattersonAVilliams match, both players seemed to be oft form, and neither could cleai tne net consistently. Games followed service until Patterson broke througti \\ illiams' service, and won tour games in succession. In the second set Williams won the first game, love, but then seemed to break up. Patterson s service was too speedy. In the thiru avt i atterson continued spleudid/y, until tlie fourth game, when he served five double faults and seemed to lose ins nerve. M illiams took the next lour games, but Patterson then recovered ms sueaainess, and won the last three. —*(A, and N.Z.) New York, Sept. 15. In the first set of the Richards v. Anderson match the former started serving and the games followed service until tne sixth and eighth games, when Richards broke through Anderson's service. In the second set Anderson, after winning the first three ga.mes, became wild, Richards winning the fourth game on his opponent’s service and gave him no further chance. In the third set Richards played in his best form, and was helped by Anderson’s errors. Patterson is the only Australian remaining in the seiti-finals oi the national singles championship. Others are Tilden, Richards and Johnston, all members of the American Davis Cup team. Patterson next meets Tilden.— (A. and N.Z.)
