SILENT INSPECTORS.

EOR DIRECTING TRAFFIC. Some time ago, Mr. A. C. Fawcett, the Hastings Borough Inspector, recommended the Borough Council to establish what he designated “Silent Inspectors” in the main thoroughly fares, for the purpose of directing traffic and maintaining the “Rule jjf the Road.” He suggested placing these “Silent inspectors,” otherwise “Silent Policemen” at the three principal cross streets —Kara mu road, Hastings street and Market street—to regulate the traffic at these crossings, i'he “Silent Inspector” is simply a light cast-iron case, and standard supporting injunctions (white on a red backkground), “Keep to the Left” on tin plates in letters about three inches in length. Mr. Fawcett pointed out that the “Inspector,” which would be fitted with a red light at night, would not only control the traffic in narrow streets (they would not be required in wide thoroughfares) but, if constructed to a suitable design, would assist in beautifying the town, as well as providing shelter to pedestrians in cases of (.lunger. The Hastings Public Works Committee turned the proposal down. The Wellington City Council, however, have been impressed with the usefulness of these mute guardians of the publicways and in that metropolis a start has been made with them, to teach the motorist and the vehicle driver the way they should go. when rounding a corner or negotiating a street junction.
