WOMEN JUSTICES.

REINTRODI’CTION OF BILL. ASKED FOR AS GOVERNMENT MEASURE. (Special to “Tribune.”) Wellington, Sept. 15. The suggestion that the Government should introduce as a Government measure a Bill to give women the right to be appointed Justices of Peace was made in the House yesterday by Mr. Sidey (Dunedin South). Mr. Sidey referred to the fate of the private Bill which passed the House and had been rejected in the Legislative Council, as the resultj Fie thought, of it having been a private members’ Bill. The Prime Minister had intimated that he supported the principle and therefore should have no qualms in introducing the Bill. The Prime Minister replied that he had to abide by standing orders, and from his recollection of them the same Bill could not be dealt with twice in one session. Ho would take time to consider the matter. He was strongly of the opinion that when the original Act was placed on the Statute Book it was intended to include the appointment of women, but by some decision of Court precedent, it was established and it had been ruled that the word “person” did not include women. He would consider whether he could introduce the Bill or not.
