RUGBY FOOTBALL.
UNIVERSITY MATCH. Wellington, Sept. 13. Sydney University played the Victoria College team this afternoon on a heavy ground w'ith a bitter cold, wind blowing. The conditions militated against a good exhibition of Rugby, but that given was far lielow what was expected. Crackenthorpe and Raymond were the only backs on the visitors’ side who appeared to possess a rudimentary knowledge of how the game should be played. There were bright bursts occasionally from openings made by Foote, but the inside backs failed to take advantage of opportunities. Victoria College were not at home on the sodden field. The backs gave only a fair display,, while the forwards did much better. Sydney scored early through the instrumentality of Raymond. Hesslein failed with the kick. Shortly afterwards College equalised by a trv by McKay. Thomas missed with the kick. At half time the score was College 9, Sydney 3. With the wind in their favour the visitors were more aggressive, tries being obtained bv Black, Foote (two) and Raymond, two being converted. Dighton scored for College and Malcolm converted. The game ended: Sydney University 21, Victoria College 14. SOUTHLAND v. WELLINGTON. Invercargill, Sept. 13. Wellington and Southland met today. The ground was wet after recent rains, but was not muddy. The game ended in a win fop the home side*by 17 points to 9 after a good exhibition. HASTINGS SUB-UNION. Sub-Union met last night. Mr. M. E. Wood presiding over an attendance consisting of Messrs R. M. n * J * O’Brien, A. Aiderman, J. A. Fraser and H. Brown (secretary). It was decided to leave the selection of the past players team against Naplier past players in the hands of Messrs M. E. Wood and W. O’Neill, who were also authorised to make all arrangements for the match, which comes off at Hastings on September 20th. The treasurer submitted a rough balance-sheet, showing that the SubUnion had just squared itself for the season. It was, however, pointed out that the Sub-Union had paid out a sum of £53 in relief grants for injuries etc., which made the position satisfactory from a financiar point of view. KING COUNTRY v. H.B. The team which will meet the representatives .of King Country (a newlyformed union with a strong team) has been announced by the selector (Mr. N. McKenzie). There are a couple of changes from the team which met Bay of Plenty. Kivell has been replaced by Hingston and O’Donoghue has been fitted into second five-eighths. Batchelor has been put in his old position of wing-forward. Full-back: Yates (Pirates). Three-quarters: Barclay (Danne. virke), J. Blake (Celtic), Grenside (Hastings). Five-eighths: (1) Kirwan (Dannevirke), (2) O’Donoghue (Celtic), Half-back: Hingston (Wairoa). Wing-forward : Batchelor (H. 5.0.8. Back row: Miller (Dannevirke), Gemmell (M.A.C.) Supports: McNab (Celtic). C. Brown, lie (Hastings). Lock: McGregor (Wairoa). Front row : Irvine (Dannevirke), Kirkpatrick (Hastings) captain. Reserves: Backs, Kivell (Pirates), W. Blake (Celtic). Forwards, Wynn (M. 8.0.8. Daley (Pirates). THIRD GRADE FINAL. H. 5.0.8. winners of the Napier section of the third grade Rugby contests, will play off for the championship with Hastings, winners of the Hastings section. The match will be played as a curtain raiser to the NapierHastings versus Wairoa game on September 23rd.
