A SPURIOUS MONARCH.
CROWN AND SCEPTRE ON TICK. Paris, Oct. 15. The Nice Court fined Leon Lafarge 500 francs for assuming spurious titles and also sentenced him for five months imprisonment for attempted swindling. Lafarge is a native of Normandy. He assumed the title of Prince de Vitanval and had himself crowned King of Transcaucasia. He notified the Great Powers of his accession and applied for the admission of his kingdom to the League of Nations. Lafarge gave French shopkeepers orders totalling 3,000,000 francs, including a gold crown and sceptre and ermine robes for himself and his queen. When arrested he possessed a few francs and explained that his lack of cash was due to the financial stringency from which the whole world is suffering.—(A. and N.Z.)
