RAILWAY DEFICITS.
SOUTH AFRICA SUFFERS TOO. LONGER HOURJTtHE REMEDY. (Received 16, 12.5 p.m ) „ Capetown, Aug. 15. A* circular issued by the railway administration states that the deficit on the first quarter of the financial year is £600,000, making an accumulated deficit of over £3,000,000. The Government proposes to introduce short-time in preference to general retrenchment and also revert to longer hours in tho case of certain grades where work is not an extensive character, and invites unions’ delegates to discuss the position with the Minister.—(A. and
