Hundreds of tons of stacked peat were destroyed. The .Pacific cable interests approached Mr W. M. Hughes regarding the possibility of laying a second line. Mri Hughes has undertaken to consult with | the Cable Board as soon as the pressure I of the conference has eased. Arthur Fells, cx-Mayor of Bermondsey (England) has decided to present his century old wine business to his employees. Ho* handed ove> funds enabling them to conduct the business on a profit-sharing basis. • At Turlock (California), Janies Shea, president of the Fruit Pickers’ Union, has been arrested, charged with kidnapping and inciting to riot in connection with the deportation of Japanese, who already have all returned. Other arrests are predicted. Von Fraudendorfer, a well-known numismatist, formerly Bavarian Minister of Railways, committed suicide at Munich after being accused of counterfeiting Roman coins sold to collectors, whereby ho realised £6,000 to carry on an intrigue with a theatrical dancer.
Dlr Hughes and Mr Massey attended the unveiling of a memorial inscribed with the names of the Australian and New Zealand contingent officers and men of the Camel Corps. The memorial i.H placed in the Victoria Embankment Garden. Mr Hughes and Mr Massey placed wreaths on the memorial and delivered brief speeches.
The phenomenal London run of “Chu Chin Chow” ended on Friday night after 2,238 performances. Sir Herbert Tree’s famous theatre has passed into the hands of a new theatrical firm, Grossmith and Malone, who have very extensive interests in West End and provincial theatres. Mr. Malone recently joined the firm in tho place of Mr. Laurillard, long associated as London representative of Williamson. Oscar Asche reopens at tho theatre in the autumn with “Mecca.”
