NEWSPRINT PAPER.
• CANADIAN SUPPLIES CANNOT BE INCREASED. 1 (Received G, 8.45 a.m.) ■ Ottawa, Jan. 3. i An official denial is given to the re- ; port that the Government contemplated eniirelv prohibiting exports of news- , print. ‘ Canadian newspapers use 20 ■ per cent, of the output and the re- . maiuing 80 per cent, must be, exported ■or the industry will close down. The i Government's only object in interfering I is to see that Canadian papers get fair ’ supplies. As the first call will not in- ! terfere with the balance, there is reason to believe that the Pacific coast mills will continue supplying Australasia this year substantially on the same basis'as last year, but publishers everywhere realise that prices are rising with acute scarcity, and all stocks are wiped out, even the richest newspapers having to be content with hand to mouth supplies- Certainly there is no hope of" Australasia getting more paper '■’than they have been receiving from Canada. —(Renter.)
