EARTHQUAKES IN MEXICO.
TERRIFYING VISITATION. Mexico City, Jan. 5. Scores are reported to have been killed by a violent earthquake, which affected many parts of Mex’co. The centre of the disturbance is believed to be near the volcano Orizaba. The State of Vera Cruz suffered the greatest damage. Wild scenes of panic were enacted there. Many natives rushed to churches, where they prayed. A similar panic occurred at Toluca, Cueranavca, and Puebla. —A. and N.Z.
TWO VILLAGES DESTROYED. PANIC STRICKEN CROWDS. (Received 6, 8.45 a.m.) Mexico City, Jan. 5. The earthquake shook ten, States and destroyed two villages. Several hundred deaths are reported. The effects of the quake wei« felt 500 miles distant. At Orizaba, 18 miles south-east of the volcano Citlaltepeth, a theatre crowded became panic-stricken and many were- injured while attempting to escape.
