THE DOMINION.

CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS.

REPLY TO HOLLAND’S STATE-

MENTS

fPIB PRESS ASSOCIATION.I Wellington, Feb. I*2.

In the absence of the Defence Minister, the Prime Minister has replied to statements made by Mr. I Holland in an election speech relative to conscientious objectors. Mr. Massey states that no man has been sentenced more than once for the same offence. The ages of those sentenced ranged from 22 to 30 years. They were not- taken Home in irons. If any were sent from England to France in irons the obvious conclusion must be that it was necessary for the authorities to take such precautions.

THE MOTUIHI BUNGLE.

CLAIM OF RESPONSIBILITY.

Wellington, Feb. 12.

The Court of Inquiry into the responsibility of Colonel Patterson and Major Osburne-Lilly in the escape of the German prisoners at Motuihi w*as resumed after the midday adjournment. Colonel Hume, comanding the Wellington District, gave evidence. He said that he had been in command of the Auckland District from November 1914, until May, 1916. He had always considered the island was under his comiband. as officer commanding the district. He had never had any orders to this effect but he had . always taken this to be the position. He did not think at the time that the letter of instructions to LieutCol. Turner disturbed the chain of communication in any way. He considered that he was in charge of the island and he held Colonel Turner to be responsible to him for the discipline of the camp and for the safeguarding of the prisoners of war.

The President: Did you not think that the letter appointing Colonel Turner was a bit ambiguous ’ —Well it might have been. Does Somes Island come under the jurisdiction of the Wellington Military District ?—No. Can you explain why Motuihi should fhen come under the Auckland Military District ’ —l have- never raised the question. If Somes Island does not come under the Officer Commanding the district, why should Motuihi Island ’ —lt seems to me that that is a matter for Headquarters to answer. You left a district where there was an internment camp, for which you considered yourself responsible and you come to a district in which there was another internment camp, add >T>u do not consider that this internment camp should also come under your jurisdiction as officer commanding the district .’—l have given that matter some thought. I had no instructions on the point and I take it that if Somes Island had been in my care I would have had some correspondence on it. This concluded the evidence of the inquiry. It may be that some witness or witnesses will have to be recalled, but that is not the present intention of the court.
