The wicket was wet. The visitors made a much better showing in their second attempt. The second over saw the encl of Mayne. The 50 went up in 45 minutes. Macartney mishit to midoff. He play ed an excellent innings. The century went up in 90 minutes, Jennings’ share being 51. He was dismissed by a splendid catch at mid-on. lie showed stylish leg "hitting and cutting, but gave a chance at 30 off Douglas. The second century took 170 minutes. Baidslcy’s middle stump was removed. He was sound and watchful, and was in for 35 minutes. Smith gave a good display of cutting. Gregory was 120 minutes at the wicket and made 50 in 65 minutes. He showed good all round play and hit 13 fourers. The innings lasted 250 minutes. The bowling changes wore frequent. The attendance was 2000. Scores:

A special meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association was held in Napier on Saturday evening. Mr. E. H. Williams (president) in the chair. Correspondence from the New Zealand Cricket Council in connection with a proposed conference to be held in Wellington on July 9th to deal with proposals for altering the rules of competition for the* Plunket Shield, was dealt with. (Auckland, Canterbury. Hawke’s Bay, Otago, and Wellington), with a view to securing a scheme for the competition acceptable to the interested bodies. After discussion, Mr. E. H. Williams was appointed delegate to represent Hawke’s Bay at the conference, the council to be notifieel that his association is prepared to meet any engagements with regard to matches which the new scheme may involve. It was further decided to give notice of motion for the next meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council to amend rule 7 of the Plunket Shield regulations, in the direction of altering the six months’ residential clause, one month to be substituted, and that the competition be confined to amateurs.
A vote of thanks to the President for undertaking to attend the conference at his own expense was passed. It was announced that, through the instrumentality of the president and Messrs. F Armstrong, H. M. Campbell, T. H. Lowry, and A. li. Russell, the Heretaunga cricket ground, Hastings, had been secured for cricket and sport generally for all time. The following resolution was unanimously passed:—“That this association places on record its kern appreciation of the public spirit shown by Mr. Williams and his co-trustees in securing this splendid ground for cricket in particular.” The ground will come under the new control at the end of the present year, and it is the intention to fence it and effect other improvements to make it an up-to-date sports ground in every- way. which will be at the disposal of sports bodies under terms which must in the near future have a markmost popular grounds in the d'str ict. VETERANS’ ASSOCIATION.
On Saturday evening at the Masonic Hotel, a meeting of the Veterans’ Association was held (Mr. E. H. ’Williams presiding) to consider rules, and elect officers. Considerable interests in the • matter ■ was shown, and it is evident that the launching of the new association must in the near future hae a marked influence in maintaining interest in and making for the progress of the game in the district. The constitution of the association embraces the following objects:—(a) To create a community of interest amongst excricketcrs throughout Hawke’s Bay, and to establish a link between the active cricketers and those who have ceased to play, (b) to foster and maintain interest in the game .n every possible wav. (c) To arrange matches as often as may be deemed advisable, between s'des of veterans representing districts in New Zealand or elsewhere, or against teams representing other association:, or clubs of veterans, (d) To arrange suitable social functions for the promotion <;f harmony amongst cricketers and their sympathisers, (e) To dispose of the lands of the association in such a manner as the committee of management liiay consider necessary towards the promotion and perpetuation of the game ol cricket. The association will be managed by a committee to be appointed at the annual meeting, three to form a quorum, such committee, to consist of the president, secretary treasurer and seven other members to be elected by the members present. Fiic vice-presidents will also be appointed, who may act ex-officio on the committee of management. The annual meeting will be held during the month of September in each year, for the purpose of receiving the accounts, necessary, and transacting any general business, five to form a quorum.

The annual subscription was fixed nt I<> 6. Ihe qualification for members to be that a candidate .Shall have ceased to actively participate in senior cricket. Active cricketers above the age of 40 will be eligible for honorary membership. It was decided to affiliate with the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association, and Mr. F. Fulton was appointed delegate.
The secret ary was instructed to forward copies of the report of the meeting to the various cr'cket associations in the Dominion with a view to creating enlarged interest in the veterans’ aims ami objects. The question of presenting caps to the intcrprovincinl representative players was. opened by Air. Canning, and it was decided to ask the Cricket Association for a suitable design. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed a very successful meeting.
